This small plane crashed after takeoff near Salmon Monday.

SALMON - A Boise man crashed his small plane Monday - and lived to tell about it.

It happened Monday afternoon at the Salmon Airport in Lemhi County. Sheriff's Deputies say Andrew Scott Patrick, 23 was taking off just before 4 p.m. when he lost control of the plane due a severe cross wind.

KPVI reports Patrick was forced to crash land 160 yards from the end of the north end of the runway. The plane traveled another 400 feet on the ground before coming to a stop. It suffered considerable damage, but the airport mechanic says the plane is repairable.

The pilot was taking off from Salmon to a back country air strip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. He was not seriously hurt.

Chief Deputy Steve Fenner says the initial investigation suggests that a strong wind gust that occurred at the time of take off was a contributing factor to the accident.
