Police say this is some sort of domestic dispute, but do not know at this point why all of this happened.
JEROME--Police say one man is dead and a woman is injured after being shot in their front yard this morning in Jerome.
Several neighbors watched the scene unfold at a house on Fifth Ave. East in Jerome shortly before 11 a.m.
Steve Lamm was one of those neighbors and he said he saw a man drive by the home twice before getting out and shooting a man several times who was outside watering his lawn.
Lamm says the man shot, Javier Zavala-Panaigua, 22, then ran inside his home and a woman, Maria Leon, 41, came out screaming at the man with the gun, who is identified as Fortino Garcia Leon, 72.
At that point Lamm jumped in and tried to get Leon away from the woman but he didn't listen. Lamm says Leon then shot the woman twice, once in the shoulder and once in the chest. The shooter then ran back into his car and tried to drive away, but Lamm threw a dumbbell through the driver-side window. Lamm said Leon then pointed the gun at him and pulled the trigger but it either jammed or was out of bullets.
The police arrived at that time and took Leon into custody. Lamm was able to walk away uninjured.
Panaigua was transported to St. Benedicts Family Medical Center in Jerome where he was later pronounced dead. Maria Leon was transported to St. Lukes Magic Valley. Fortino Garcia Leon is being held in the Jerome County Jail. Charges are pending and will be filed on Monday.
Fortino Garcia Leon and Maria Leon are married, but she had been living at the home of Javier Zavala-Panaigua. Police say this is some sort of domestic dispute, but do not know at this point why all of this happened.
Police say this is the second shooting to happen in this neighborhood in two weeks. Police say today's shooting is not related to one that happened a couple of weeks ago.
