Boise State wins two ESPYs
05:50 PM MDT on Thursday, July 12, 2007
BOISE - Boise State University’s 2006 football program snagged two ESPY awards during the taping of the annual sports awards show Wednesday night.
The school was nominated in two categories – best play and best game – and won both.
“It was a great night for Boise State University and our program,” Bronco football Head Coach Chris Petersen said. “This event was a lot of fun to be a part of.”
Boise State’s improbable last-second win over Oklahoma during a wild finish in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl helped take the team to the top of the Internet voting in the best game category – over an Oklahoma State/Texas college hoops tilt, and the Colts/Patriots NFC Championship game.
The Jared Zabransky to Ian Johnson two-point conversion play that won the game in overtime took the best play category. The so-called “trick play” beat out plays from Major League Baseball, NFL, NBA and the X Games.
Johnson, Zabransky, Legedu Naanee and head coach Chris Petersen were on hand to accept the awards. The show will air this Sunday evening on ESPN.
LaDainian Tomlinson won four trophies at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday night, including male athlete of the year for his record-setting season with the San Diego Chargers.
Tomlinson defeated LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Wimbledon champion Roger Federer and Tiger Woods for athlete of the year.
James and comedian Jimmy Kimmel co-hosted the 15th annual show honoring the year's best sports moments and athletes at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.
