UPDATE: Obama to speak in Boise Saturday morning
02:03 PM MST on Tuesday, January 29, 2008
BOISE -- Barack Obama is scheduled to speak in Boise Saturday morning. That word today from his campaign headquarters in Boise.
Idaho democratic leaders are gearing up for a visit from Senator Barack Obama.
He is the first democratic presidential candidate to visit the Gem State in four years.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama will be here to campaign for Super Tuesday.
Barack Obama's campaign office in Boise has come to life with the news of the senator's visit.
It has not been confirmed where or what time he will actually be speaking Saturday. A search is underway for a venue.
Wendy Jaquet, state co-chair for Obama's campaign, says his main goal is to appeal to the democratic delegates on February 5th.
“We have 44 counties and 44 caucus operations and that's when we get a chance to choose our presidential nominee, and the Obama campaign has had people here for weeks and we now have six offices across the state and they're the only people really organized, and for him to come reaffirms what we've been trying to make happen, and that is for our state to go for Obama,” said Jaquet.
Jaquet believes Obama's visit will energize the people of Idaho and believes he has a good chance of winning the caucus on Super Tuesday.
“Obama really appeals to independents and Republicans more than I think than the other candidates, that's why he'd be good for Idaho and he'll help our races as well as his own race for president,” said Jaquet.
Jaquet pointed to the fact that Idaho is typically a red state.
And of course Republican candidates Mitt Romney and Rudy Giulani visited have visited Idaho within the last six months. But she feels that Obama's visit will show that he really cares about the people of Idaho.
Obama is touring the West this week with stops scheduled in Phoenix on Wednesday and Salt Lake City on Saturday.
The last democratic presidential candidate to make an Idaho trip during the campaign was John Kerry in March of 2004 when he spent a week vacationing in Sun Valley.
