New bill could make new Idaho buildings green

BOISE - Idaho lawmakers are considering requiring that any major state-funded building conform to new energy efficiency standards.
The measure was introduced Thursday in the House Environment, Energy and Technology Committee.
If it passes, the Democrat- and Republican-backed plan would require all new buildings and renovations be designed to a standard that achieves energy savings of at least 30 percent greater than current Idaho law.
Senator Kate Kelly, one of the sponsors along with Senator Curt McKenzie, says energy efficient buildings cost little or no more than conventional designs, but can reap significant savings over time from lower energy use.
She says taxpayers could save nearly $1 million over the first five years.
The bill is similar to a measure that failed a year ago, in the 2007 Legislature.
