Parents arraigned for girl’s death

TWIN FALLS - A child is dead after a house fire in Twin Falls Tuesday afternoon and the little girl’s parents have been charged in connection with the death.

Police say the parents left two small children alone while they ran errands.

The home in the 400 block of Gardner Avenue caught fire just after 2 p.m. Tuesday with the two children asleep inside.

Neighbors called 911, and firefighters rushed to the scene and pulled the brother and sister from the fire.

Paramedics rushed two-year-old Jasmine S. Gorbenko to the Salt Lake Center burn center. She died early Wednesday morning from injuries suffered in the fire.

Jasmine’s brother, 11-month-old Emmanuel, was taken to St Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. He is still hospitalized today.

The parents showed up at the Twin Falls hospital after the fire.

The children’s parents, Inna Gorbenko, 38, and Stepan Kutran, 31, both of Twin Falls, originally faced charges of injury to a child in the case.  Prosecutors instead have charged them with involuntary manslaughter.

Both are being held on $100,00 bond each. A Russian interpreter was used during a court hearing Wednesday.

Twin Falls police and fire investigators continue to work to determine the cause of the fire.
