Bill would prevent ban on university concealed weapons ban
10:43 AM MST on Thursday, February 7, 2008
BOISE - Lawmakers say they will consider a bill that would prevent Idaho's public colleges and universities from banning concealed weapons on campus.
The Senate State Affairs Committee agreed today to schedule hearings on the bill, which could clear the way for students to carry concealed weapons as long as they first notify school administrators.
The measure would require the State Board of Education and the University of Idaho's Board of Regents to adopt the policy.
University of Idaho Junior Aled Baker says he drafted the proposal with other students after the shooting spree at Virginia Tech last April. He says it would give students an opportunity to react to violence.
At least six other states are considering similar laws. Utah is the only state with a law that expressly allows concealed weapons on public university campuses.
