H-Bowl: We want Boise State and Ball State
06:41 PM MST on Monday, December 1, 2008
BOISE - Officials with the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl are on the record: they want Boise State and Ball State to square off on the blue turf.
A long meeting of the bowl's board of directors started early Monday morning and continued into the afternoon. Rather than making a decision on whether to release Boise State from its obligation to the home town game, the board instead said it will make a "strong recommendation" to the Western Athletic Conference to pursue a Boise State, Ball State matchup.
Ball State head coach Brady Hoke expressed reluctance to play the Broncos to the Indianapolis Star-Press.
"If you ask any coach, he'd rather play at a neutral site," Hoke told the paper. "(Boise) has a great following, which they deserve, and they're a great, well-coached football team. It would be a big challenge for us anyway, without playing them on their home field."
But H-Bowl executive director Kevin McDonald thinks the battle of undefeateds is a match made in bowl heaven. He told NewsChannel 7's David Augusto that he hopes a deal can be made.
USA Today reports the Humanitarian Bowl may be willing to increase its standard $550,000 payout, and could even make Ball State the official home team in Bronco Stadium.
Boise State has lost just twice on its home turf since 1999, but if a deal is made, the Boise State, Ball State matchup would be the only bowl game featuring two undefeated teams this season. Utah and Alabama are the only other undefeated teams.
The H-Bowl would have to also make arrangements with the Atlantic Coast Conference, since they are contractually obligated to host a team from the ACC. That deal expires after this year's game.
Both the BSUs are likely left outside the BCS system, despite technically qualifying for the honor of a big money game. Utah plays spoiler for the other two schools - since the BCS system isn't required to take more than one team from a non-BCS conference.
