Mayor regrets keeping bong at home
02:24 PM MDT on Tuesday, August 21, 2007
IDAHO FALLS -- The mayor of Idaho Falls says he made a bad decision to keep boxes of marijuana pipes and other drug paraphernalia in a storage room at his house.
Mayor Jared Fuhriman says the items are leftovers from his days as a police officer.
During his career with the city's police department, Fuhriman coordinated drug abuse and prevention programs for parents and students.
The mayor's regret comes in the wake of the arrest last week of his son, 19-year-old Peyton Fuhriman, and two others for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use.
According to a police report, one of the defendants said the bong allegedly in their possession came from the mayor's house.
The mayor says he "was sick about it ... and takes full responsibility."
Fuhriman retired from the police department in January 2006 after taking over as the city's top elected official.
The items have been returned to the police department to be destroyed.
