CableOne users blocked from live Olympic video

BOISE - Some users of CableONE across SW Idaho are having trouble watching live video of the Olympics online.
When users click on a live video stream, they are asked to enter their ZIP code and select their TV provider. Folks who click DirecTV or Dish Network don’t have any trouble, but if they pick “Cable One” – they’re out of luck.
A message pops up informing CableONE users they won’t be able to see the live action from China.
“We're sorry, you will not have access to live Olympic video or long-form replays online because the TV service provider you selected is not a partner of NBCOlympics.com,” the message reads. “Please contact your local cable, satellite or telecommunications operator for more details.”
NBC Olympics says more than 90% of the country gets the service – so why are CableONE users left out in the cold?
CableONE’s Melanie Stroupe said they couldn’t cut a deal with NBC Universal to provide the streaming service.
“It’s part of a premium package they are offering to cable companies,” she said. “To get (the streaming) requires that we add two temporary HD channels.”
To offer streaming video, the cable companies were required to add an HD Soccer channel and HD Basketball channel.
CableONE said they didn’t think that was the right move for customers.
“Because of bandwidth issues and resources, we couldn’t add the streaming video, which we’d love to.”
Instead Stroupe says CableONE is launching three permanent HD channels, including Disney Channel HD.
Since NBCOlympics.com doesn’t “detect” a user’s cable provider, a user could select a satellite service like DirecTV to get through the block.
