BOISE -- Potential jurors have been summoned to the federal courthouse in Boise as the high profile sentencing of confessed killer Joseph Duncan gains new momentum.

Duncan had the opportunity to question the jurors for the first time since he has been allowed to represent himself.

While Duncan was allowed to question jurors -- he didn't.

During the jury-questioning phase today Duncan never asked a question to the people who could determine whether he lives or dies.

After the prosecution and defense attorneys questioned the first two potential jurors, U.S. District Court Judge Edward Lodge stopped the proceedings and questioned Duncan.

Lodge asked him if he was sure he wanted to question the jurors.

Duncan said he does not, but understood that in order to represent himself in the sentencing phase he would have to participate in jury selection.

The prosecution asked several questions of each person, but when it was Duncan’s turn, he passed on the opportunity.

In all, 20 potential jurors were questioned Thursday.

Because Duncan didn't participate, Judge Lodge played a bigger role in asking potential jurors questions.

The questioning will start again Friday morning and continue until 59 people are selected.

From those 59 people, 12 jurors and three alternates will be chosen.
