Inmates make alcohol from rotten fruit
11:28 AM MDT on Friday, May 16, 2008
IDAHO FALLS - Brian Brown's fellow deputies at the Bonneville County Jail in eastern Idaho have started calling him "The Nose."
That's because of his ability to sniff out home-made alcoholic beverages made on the sly by inmates.
The illicit beverage is called "squawky."
Inmates make it by hoarding oranges, apples and other fruits from their meals.
Then the inmates find a container, sometimes even the toilet, and add water to the fruit. For yeast, a slice of bread is added.
Then the inmates wait for the mixture to ferment.
Brown says he can't believe anyone would drink it because it smells like rotten orange juice and looks like vomit.
