Tree crushes couple during Wash. windstorm

DIAMOND LAKE, Wash.— The Wednesday night storm left a couple critically injured on Diamond Lake.

Witnesses heard a violent thud as a tree crashed down onto their boat.

Neighbors said no one was prepared for the fury of the wind storm which brought winds stronger than 60-miles-per-hour through the area.

Patty Markofski said the people renting a cabin nearby were still on their boat when the storm hit.

"They were just out enjoying the nice warm weather, and it changed just like that," added Markofski. The couple had just pulled up to the dock when a tree fell and crushed them. "It was very horrific," said Markofski, "A lot of tears. It just makes you sick to your stomach when that kind of thing happens to somebody."

Neighbors rushed to help and Markofski said the husband and wife were critically injured.

The couple was taken to a nearby hospital. Hospital staff said both the man and the woman were in serious condition as of Thursday night.

The couple's kids were not injured when the tree fell according to neighbors.
