Race for the Cure helps 'Fill the Gap'

BOISE -- St. Luke s says it s doing something as a grantee of the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, that has needed to be done before, and they call it Filling a Gap!

That gap is when a woman is told she needs a further evaluation after an abnormal mammogram, but her insurance won t pay for it.

Jill Winschell, nurse navigator coordinator for St. Luke s, says some women who are now covered under The Idaho Healthcare Exchange don t have the coverage for follow up tests.

But one of the things we have found is that there is a gap, said Winschell.

If a lady is called back for the diagnostic mammogram it doesn t always cover that.

In the past, we would just talk about oh, they just don t have insurance . Well now they do, but it s still low income and now there is a gap that is not being paid for, so the funds are available for that, said Winschell.

Winschell says it s heartwarming to offer that option of a follow up to women who can t afford it, and that is what the Komen funds do for women in our community.

Once again the Race is this Saturday morning on Parkcenter Blvd. You can register at race time to be part of an important effort in our community.
