Man's body found in the Payette River

GEM COUNTY -- The body of a man was pulled from the Payette River Thursday.

Gem County Sheriff Chuck Rolland told KTVB the remains were recovered at about 11:40 a.m. near the Montour Bridge. The man has not yet been identified.

Rolland said a citizen spotted the body in the water and called authorities.

The discovery comes less than a month after a driver in a blue pickup plunged off Idaho 55 and into the raging river near the Gardena Bridge.

Family members of 43-year-old Kuna resident Jerry Coburn say they are convinced he was the driver. Coburn's fishing rod and other possessions were found floating in the Black Canyon Reservoir after his disappearance.

The spot where the body was recovered is about 15 miles downstream from the area where the pickup went into the river.

Michael Taggart, Coburn's stepbrother, said authorities told his family Thursday that a body had been recovered, but said it was to early to tell whether it was Coburn. The coroner's office is handling the investigation, Taggart said.
