Juvenile arrested after violent threat to Melba school

The Canyon County sheriff explains the threat.

MELBA -- Canyon County officers are crediting an alert citizen with stopping a violent event at Melba Elementary School.

Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue says officers were alerted to suspicious activity from a citizen near the school Saturday afternoon.

After arriving, officers found a credible, violent threat to the school.

A juvenile was arrested in connection with the threat.

Sheriff Donahue says the juvenile attended the school district.

Because the suspect is under the age of 18, no additional information was released.

According to Donahue, the threat was scheduled for Monday.

Students were sent home with a letter Monday afternoon, stating that the threat had been averted. Donahue says the officers believe it is an isolated incident.

Donahue says that citizens should always report suspicious activity. In this case, Donahue says it may have saved lives.

"If you see something, say something," Donahue said.

This investigation is still ongoing. If you have any additional information, please contact the Canyon County Sheriff's Office.
