Gunshot kills dog, wounds woman in Meridian

MERIDIAN - A woman is in the hospital and a dog is dead after a shooting in Meridian.

Meridian Police were called to the area of North Meridian Road and West Chrisfield Drive at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday. They say they found a dead pit bull, which had been shot one time, and a 31-year-old woman, the dog's owner, also with a gunshot wound.

Police say a man was walking his Basset Hound when the pit bull broke free from its owner and charged at the man and his dog.

The dogs' owners tried to separate the animals, and when the pit bull advanced on the hound again, the hound's owner drew his gun and fired one shot, which killed the pit bull, passed through the dog, and struck the pit bull's owner in the abdomen.

The woman was taken to the hospital with an injury that is not considered life-threatening.

Meridian Police are still investigating, and have not made any arrests or pressed any charges.
