EVENT GUIDE: Veterans Day

BOISE - Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11, and a number of events are planned around the Treasure Valley to honor those who have served our country.

Local businesses are also paying tribute to veterans by offering free and discounted services, from food to haircuts and oil changes.

Here is a look at the events taking place on Veterans Day:

VETERANS HOME CEREMONY

  • Friday, Nov. 11
  • 11 a.m.
  • Idaho State Veterans Home
  • 320 Collins Road, Boise

The public is invited to attend a special Veterans Day ceremony at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will honor all military veterans, with a special emphasis this year on Women in the military.

This year's program will include an 11-Bell ceremony and featured guest speakers. Also at the ceremony, Sen. Mike Crapo will give out his annual "Spirit of Freedom" service awards to local veterans and volunteers.

BOISE STATE CELEBRATION

  • Stueckle Sky Center

The public is invited to the annual Veterans Celebration in appreciation and support of all the students, staff and veterans at Boise State. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Double R Ranch Room of the Stueckle Sky Center. Free parking available in west stadium lot. Also on Friday, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., the school will host the U.S. Navy Flag Placement in the quad.

The public is also encouraged to donate at a Veterans Day blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hatch Ballroom of the Student Union Building.

BOISE NATIONAL VETERANS DAY RUN

  • Veterans Memorial Park, Boise

The 3rd Annual National Veterans Day Run in Boise will take place at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday, Nov. 11. The race will offer three distances including an 11K, 5K and a one-mile walk/run.

A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit military charities. Donations in previous years have included the Wounded Warrior Project, Folds of Honor, Operation Gratitude, Team Red, White and Blue, and numerous local veterans charities.

NNU HOMECOMING HONORS VETERANS

  • Northwest Nazarene University
  • Thursday, Nov. 10 and Friday, Nov. 11

NNU's Homecoming and Family Weekend will include events celebrating and honoring veterans on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, a reception will be held in the Veterans Services Center from 4 - 6 p.m. The campus community, current student veterans, alumni veterans and their families are all invited.

On Friday, a veterans breakfast will be held in the north gallery of the Brandt Center at 8 a.m., and will include a prayer, breakfast, patriotic music, and a guest speaker.

The annual Veterans Day Ceremony will get underway at 11:30 a.m. at the Brandt Center, and will include a military color guard, music, and a special guest speaker. After the ceremony, a community open house will take place in the Office of Veterans Services. NNU students, staff and the public are invited to attend both events.

CALDWELL VETERANS DAY CEREMONY

  • Caldwell Veterans' Memorial Hall
  • Carnegie Library
  • 1101 Cleveland Boulevard, Caldwell

The Caldwell Veterans Council will host its annual Veterans Day celebration on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Caldwell Veterans Memorial Hall. Guest speakers include Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas and several leaders of state veterans groups.

After the ceremony, attendees are invited to take tours of the Caldwell Veterans Memorial Hall. There will also be a silent auction of items inside the hall to raise funds to complete the construction of the facility.

On Saturday, the Caldwell Gun Club will be hosting the first annual Caldwell Veterans Council Sporting Clay Shoot, a fundraiser for the Caldwell Veterans Memorial Hall. Registration is open until the event begins on 9 a.m. For more information, or to register online, click here

CWI PATRIOT RANGE

  • Friday, Nov. 4 - Saturday Nov. 12
  • College of Western Idaho, Nampa

For the fourth consecutive year, the College of Western Idaho will play host to a powerful patriotic display. The CWI Patriot Range features 300 American flags presented on the west lawn of the school's academic building.

The flags were donated by the Eagle Field of Honor and installed by the CWI Veterans Association and Student Enrichment Department.

The field is lit at night. The display will be up from Nov. 4 - 12.

CWI VETERANS DAY CEREMONY

  • Friday, Nov. 11
  • 1 p.m.
  • CWI Nampa Campus Academic Building

The Patriot Range will provide a backdrop for the college's Veterans Day ceremony. The event gets under way at 1 p.m. and will feature a student choir, guest speakers, and more.
