Police: 13-year-old girl took family SUV, crashed it into pole

A 13-year-old girl is facing charges after taking her family's SUV for a ride.

GREENLEAF -- A collision with a power pole is blocking Highway 19 in Canyon County.

The wreck happened at 10:22 a.m. Wednesday in Greenleaf.

Wilder Police say a 13-year-old girl ran away from home and took the family car. While driving away she crashed the 1998 GMC Jimmy into the power pole and a parked SUV.

The impact of the crash broke the wooden pole and sent it leaning toward the ground. Power lines are down in the area and some customers are without electricity.

After the accident, the girl got out of the SUV and ran away, but was later taken into custody by police. She faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license. More charges could be added.

Police say the girl was limping, but refused medical attention. No one else was injured.

The Canyon County Sheriff's Office and Wilder Police responded to the crash.

Idaho Power crews are working to repair the broken pole, and hope to have the highway reopened soon.
