Community mourns Boise man killed at cheese factory

DJ Marsh died in a forklift accident at Nampa cheese plant.

NAMPA -- D.J. Marsh was well known throughout the softball community in the Treasure Valley. He was a son and a brother who worked at Sorrento Lactalis in Nampa.

Friends, family, and those who played softball with Marsh are now mourning his sudden death.

The Ada County coroner says the 41-year-old Boise man died while working at the cheese factory on Thursday. Coroner Dotti Owens said Marsh was pinned between a forklift and a warehouse shelving unit. He was rushed to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise in serious condition, but died from his injuries at the hospital later that afternoon.

The cause of death is listed as "severe crushing injuries." Marsh's death has been ruled an accident.

Meanwhile, those who knew him, like Pete McBride, say he will be greatly missed. "He always will be there but to not have him on the field, it's going to be heartbreaking, going to be tough at times, but he will be remembered," said McBride.

McBride says so many people knew Marsh, and he was an amazing athlete. "It's amazing to sit there and watch him play, hit a bomb, that you would think went into orbit, it's circling the earth because of how far he hit it... He had a huge impact on everybody's life, you just knew when he was on the field he was going to be entertaining, knew it was going to be a good time."

The softball community is now planning a vigil in his honor Friday night at Willow Lane Park around 10 p.m. They will be releasing balloons in his memory on Field 1.

Friends have also set up a webpage to raise money for his funeral arrangements.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the death. They also tell KTVB they've completed five different on site inspections at the cheese plant in previous years. But, we were unable to learn more about the specifics of those complaints.

Lactalis released a statement about the incident Friday morning, saying they will also conduct an investigation into how the accident happened.

The entire statement is below:

Lactalis American Group regretfully confirms that a tragic accident occurred at the company's manufacturing facility in Nampa, Idaho.  Yesterday, at approximately 7:20am MST, an employee was injured while operating a standing forklift, and later passed away at the hospital.  Plant employees immediately provided assistance and an ambulance was dispatched following a call to 911.

Our first priority is the health and safety of our personnel. The company has launched a full investigation in order to determine the cause of this tragic accident.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of our lost colleague.
