Caught on camera: inmate tries to escape in Ada County

ADA COUNTY -- Rodney Seiber was being transported from Nevada to Canyon County, where he was wanted in connection with a Nampa carjacking.

He was being brought to Idaho by a private company that transports prisoners, when he got out at the Boise Stage Stop to use the bathroom.

Surveillance video from the Stage Stop shows Seiber running out of the bathroom area toward a door on the back side of the store, leaving his shoes behind.

The security officer with the transport company chased after him, but didn't catch him. Police said Seiber ran off the highway and attempted to stop a car by brandishing a knife at the woman inside, who did not stop. He gave himself up about half an hour later.

The Canyon County Sheriff's office said this is the first time they've had a transported suspect escape from them.

We've had more prisoners escape from patrol cars around here in handcuffs, and I think that would actually be a higher occurrence in the United States than the private transport companies having any issues like this, said Canyon County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy, Marv Dashiell.

He said Canyon County has companies put in bids to do transport work for them, and they generally go with the company who submits the lowest bid.

It's actually a lot more convenient for us and usually is cost saving for us instead of us having deputies travel to another jurisdiction, whether we're flying, whether we're renting cars or whatever and then paying the deputies and having them away from the office and everything else to bring them back, said Dashiell.

Dashiell said Ada County will be investigating Seiber's escape, and the private company will likely do an internal investigation.

That company made contact with the Canyon County Sheriff's Office Friday and apologized. He said they would have been informed that Seiber was an escape risk, as part of the original bidding process.
