BOISE -- The Idaho State Department of Agriculture says two horses in southwest Idaho have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The agency in a statement on Friday says that means virus-carrying mosquitoes are in the area and residents should take precautions to protect themselves and their animals.

One of the horses that tested positive is near Parma and the other near Meridian.

The agency says the virus can be life threatening for people, starting as a flu-like illness.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites and West Nile virus:

  • Wear bug spray, or long pants and long sleeves
  • Empty standing water near your home
  • Call your county's mosquito abatement district if you notice a lot of mosquitoes in your area.
