BOISE -- The first significant snowfall of 2014 in the Boise area made for a tough morning commute.

Only a few inches of snow fell throughout the Treasure Valley Wednesday morning, but a freezing rain mix contributed to the problems faced by area drivers.

Emergency crews were busy across the area responding to crashes and slide-offs.

In Ada County, dispatchers answered calls for 50 non-injury crashes, 22 slide-offs and seven injury crashes between 3:30 a.m. and noon on Wednesday.

In Canyon County, Idaho State Police stayed busy helping drivers near Interstate 84 and Garrity Boulevard. Multiple crashes there backed up traffic, slowing down the morning commute.

The Canyon County Sheriff's spokesperson says deputies responded to 16 calls Wednesday morning -- mostly slide-offs. No ambulances were needed.

But because of the high number of crashes, the morning commute took double the amount of time it usually does for some drivers.

In Ada County, highway district crews tried to stay ahead of this storm. They sprayed de-icer and used salt and sand to try and clear roads.

Road crews were called in around midnight to get a handle on conditions before the morning commute. Every crew available was called in.

ACHD says 50 pieces of equipment were used last night and this morning to improve conditions.

ONE SCHOOL REPORTS DELAY

Compass Charter School in Meridian is the only school reporting a two-hour delay.

Motorists should take extra time, clear windows and headlights from snow, and drive defensively.

Freeways speeds were only about 45 mph through much of the early morning.
