BOISE -- Millions of Americans are traveling today for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

AAA estimates 42.5 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more from home during the holiday. That's four percent more than last year despite higher airfare and gas prices.

Although this is said to be the busiest travel day of the year, it has been a much different situation on Idaho roads and at the Boise Airport.

We checked out the airport Wednesday morning, and it was pretty quiet for the day before Thanksgiving.

“Not a lot of people. I was telling my husband we could have a football game here," said Barbara Callahan.

Barbara and Walt Callahan are on their way to California. They arrived at the airport before 8 a.m.

"I was so nervous about flying out this morning. We're way too early. I didn't even think I'd find a parking place, but I did right on the lower level," said Walt Callahan.

Their flight was scheduled to depart at 9:55 a.m.

"I thought there was going to be a mob here, and what, there's six people over there. Policemen are sitting down relaxing, having coffee," said Walt Callahan.

Even Skycap employees were able to sit back and enjoy a nice quiet morning.

The Timmermans were flying to Salt Lake City and also arrived several hours early.

"Crowded today? No. Empty. Empty, just dead. We walked straight to the front of the line, checked in, and now I imagine we'll be sitting for quite a while," said Neal Timmerman.

Even though the morning before Thanksgiving came in like a lamb, Boise Airport employees know that it will likely end like a lion.

“I think everybody is waiting for that half day. I think around noon this place will pick up quite a bit," said Timmerman.

A few travelers said the airport was slower Wednesday than your average weekday.

Airport officials estimate travel will be slightly up this year compared to last year, with just under 25,000 people flying in and out of Boise this week.
