BOISE – More speed limit changes are coming to area roads.
The Idaho Transportation Department announced it will lower the speed limit on 2.2 miles of State Street between Glenwood Street and Highway 55 - from 55 mph to 45 mph beginning Aug. 7. ITD says the change is for safety reasons.
"There are several schools, businesses and side streets along this section of State Street," said ITD southwest Idaho Traffic Engineer Kevin Sablan. "With traffic traveling at 55 mph, it was becoming increasingly difficult for motorists to safely enter and cross the highway."
Local law enforcement agencies support the lower speed limit.
The section of State Street is from the Home Depot to the Maverik gas station just west of the Walmart at State and Glenwood.
There have been 170 crashes on that stretch of road in the past five years. And there are nearly 75 businesses and residences in that area. Traffic engineers say safely getting in and out of those entrances and exits requires a lower speed limit.
