EMMETT – The Emmett Police Department and Idaho State Police are investigating the first homicide in Emmett in nearly a decade.

Gem County Prosecuting Attorney Richard Linville says 78-year-old Darole Carpenter is the man who died.

With crime scene tape up around Carpenter's home, neighbors are shocked that police are investigating a homicide on their block.

"I don't know, it's crazy. It's surprising. I never expected it here that's for sure," said Timothy McDaid.

Those neighbors and police want to know how a quiet man became the victim of a homicide.

We know someone, and detectives won't say who, found Carpenter's body inside his Emmett home on Tuesday.

Police detectives have leads and are interviewing people in this case, but they still want the public's help to solve this case.

Carpenter lived in a quiet home at the end of a long dirt driveway off East 4th Street in Emmett. His home is now the center of a homicide investigation.

"Idaho State Police has been investigating and the circumstances indicate that it should be investigated as a homicide," said Linville.

Linville says he is not able to release a lot of information right now, so questions like how Carpenter died and who found his body are not being answered.

But Timothy McDaid who shares a backyard fence with Carpenter did provide a little more information about what police are looking into. Detectives came to his door asking questions about Sunday and Monday night.

"They were just asking if we had heard any gun shots or anything like that. If we had any information to help them better with what they were doing over here and just basically wanted to know what was going on, if we had seen anybody coming out or anything like that," said McDaid.

McDaid says he didn't hear or see anything suspicious. But he did see, early Thursday morning around 2:30 a.m., several detectives walking around Carpenter's home with flashlights looking for something, but he doesn't know what.

Now, he and his neighbors are confused and want to know what's going on.

"Yeah, it's startling,” said McDaid. “I mean, it's right behind my house. I've got my son and wife inside, so I mean, it's scary."

Thursday two members of the Gem County Sheriff's Posse were at Carpenter's home making sure the crime scene remained undisturbed.

Idaho State Police is also involved in this case, assisting Emmett Police by adding resources and experience, because it's been nine years since officers in Emmett have investigated a homicide.

The Gem County prosecutor expects to be able to release more information on this case once the autopsy is complete. When they do we'll be sure to update this story.

If you have any information on this case, call the Emmett Police Department at 208-365-6055.
