EAGLE -- Police say a 25-year-old Eagle man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after an accident that killed his 21-year-old passenger just before 3 a.m. Friday on State Street.
Idaho State Police say Andrew Cassell was driving a 2004 Kia Optima when he crashed into a power pole and killed his passenger Aldina Ekic near the intersection of Horseshoe Bend Road.
While Cassell was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Ekic died at the scene.
Her friend, Crystal Anderson, stopped by the crash scene to put up some flowers in her memory. She says Ekic was a sweet woman who will be missed.
"Words can't even describe how much she will be missed, I know a lot of people are hurt by this and she was loved by many and missed by even more," said Anderson.
ISP officers are investigating the crash, and say alcohol was a contributing factor. They also say Ekic was not wearing her seatbelt.
"We had a tragic accident," said Sgt. Sam Ketchum. "Somebody driving down the road, not paying attention, or under the influence, and slams into the power pole. Now, we have a young person that's dead."
Cassell was booked into the Ada County Jail. He will be arraigned on the felony charge Monday afternoon.
Court documents indicate that Cassell has a long criminal history dating back to 2005. It includes several speeding charges, along with driving without privileges, and drug and alcohol violations.
