NAMPA --  If you own a dog in the City of Nampa, there's a new animal control ordinance you'll want to be aware of.

Starting Monday, the city is requiring all Nampa residents to register their dogs. This applies to any dog living in the city that is over six months old.

The city says the goal of the new licensing is to help with some common animal control issues, like lost dogs being placed at the shelter instead of returned immediately to their homes.

You can register your dogs by mail or in person at the Nampa Police Department at 820 2nd St. South or at Nampa Central Services at 224 11th Ave. South.

To register, you will need proof from your veterinarian of a current rabies vaccination. The license will expire at the same time the vaccination does. An annual license will cost $12 for an altered dog and $48 for an unaltered dog. A three year license is also available if your dog has a rabies vaccination for that period.

There are discounts available if you have proof from your vet that your dog has been spayed or neutered or if your dog has been micro chipped. Residents will receive a 50 percent discount if they are over 65.

You can also register in person at the Kindness Small Animal Medical Center, the Idaho Veterinarian Hospital or the All Valley Pet Clinic.

The city will honor dog licenses issued by the Canyon County Animal Shelter prior to the shelter going private. That lasts until the license expires, at which point Nampa residents will need to get a new dog license with the city.
