CALDWELL -- Authorities in Canyon County have released the identity of a man who died last Friday following a pursuit with the Nampa Police Department.

The deceased man is 33-year-old Anthony Firkins Jr. of Caldwell.

Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris says an autopsy was performed on the body Friday but failed to provide them with a cause of death. It will likely take at least two weeks to get back toxicology results before they can know more about how Firkins died.

Firkins died while in police custody following a high-speed chase in Nampa on the morning of April 19.  The chase began around 3 a.m. near Hudson and Canyon streets as officers responding to a report of a woman screaming.

Police tried to stop a pickup driving in a reckless manner with headlights on, but the driver sped away.  The truck crashed a few minutes later near 11th Avenue North and Industrial Road.

Firkins fled the scene on foot and jumped a fence into a local business. He was found hiding under a trailer and taken into custody.

While in police custody, Firkins stopped breathing. He was treated by paramedics and then taken to a local hospital where he died.

The incident is investigation by the Critical Incident Task Force, with the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office acting as the lead agency.
