BOISE -- A man opened fire on a dog in a West Boise neighborhood after the man and his wife felt threatened by the dog, police said.
Officers were called to the neighborhood just before 10 a.m. Sunday, for a report of a shot fired.
The man told police he shot at the dog after he and his wife felt the dog threatened them as they walked their own dog.
Police say neighbors reported a German Shepherd running loose in the neighborhood.
The dog was hit by the shot. It was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to survive.
In the city, dogs are required to be kept under control by the owner and allowing a dog to run at large on a street or alley may be a violation of city code, police said.
Officers say the man was legally in possession of the gun and no citations were issued.
