BOISE -- An Ada County judge has ordered a mental evaluation for persistent DUI offender 55-year-old Terry Ash from Boise.
Ash was tried and found guilty for his 14th DUI on June 30, 2012. He was also found guilty of being a persistent offender.
Ash's first DUI came in 1971, when he was just a teenager.
Ada County prosecutor Shelly Armstrong says by 1993, he had eight DUI's, and each of those DUI's were misdemeanors. In the time since, Ash has also been charged with five felony DUI's, among other crimes including stealing, and evading police.
Ash's latest sentencing was scheduled for Wednesday, August 22nd.
During the proceedings, Armstrong asked an Ada County Judge to sentence Ash to life in prison with a fixed minimum sentence of 20 years.
However, Ash's attorney then asked for a mental evaluation for his client, citing a history of "psychological problems," poverty, and other extenuating circumstances.
During the trial, Ash himself spoke up, saying he had "issues" he had to deal with.
His mental evaluation has been set for 9 a.m. October 17th at the Ada County Jail.
