BOISE -- Some 750 people packed the Boise Centre Friday to raise money for the Learning Lab.

The Garden City non-profit is celebrating its 20th year.

Friday, they held their biggest fundraiser of the year: the Lunch for Literacy.

The Learning Lab helps adults learn to read, get a GED and learn English.

About 98 percent of the adults are low income.

In their 20 years in the community, nearly 3,000 Idahoans have gone through the program.

"If the parents can't read typically the children are ill-prepared when they go into the educational system, so that's breaking the cycle," said Rich Toney with the Learning Lab Board of Directors. "If we can get it to the point where the parents can read to their kids and understand the importance of it, then the kids are better prepared when they start out in education."

The money raised from the Lunch for Literacy will help pay the Learning Lab pay for staff, facilities, books and materials for students.
