BOISE -- Ada County Sheriff's Office says a couple from California is being held on a $2 million bond in the Ada County Jail after they sold 10 pounds of methamphetamine to an undercover detective.

The sheriff's office says the investigation started in early July, when narcotic detectives agreed to buy the 10 pounds of meth at $12,000 a pound, and planned to meet 24-year-old Oscar Gutirrez-Chavez and 19-year-old Areli Mejia in Boise on July 18.

Gutierrez-Chavez and Mejia picked up the drugs in Northern California and arrived in Boise just before midnight on Thursday.

A short time later, deputies arrested Guiterrez-Chavez and Mejia, after going to a Boise-area home. That is where narcotics detectives found 10 1-pound bags hidden inside their car.

In addition to the meth that was seized, detectives also seized a Volkswagen Passat and more than $800 in cash.

Ada County Sheriff's narcotics detectives had help from the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force on the case.

Gutierrez-Chavez and Mejia are both charged with trafficking a controlled substance and awaiting a preliminary hearing on August 3.

Gutirrez-Chavez is also on an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold at the jail.
