BOISE -- The Idaho National Guard is recognizing a Treasure Valley teen who's been working to improve the lives of the children of military service members.
Vanessa Munro is the daughter of Major Heidi Munro, and on Thursday afternoon, she received the Idaho National Guard Youth Volunteer of the Year Award.
During the past year, Vanessa has given a lot of time to the National Guard Youth Program, as a junior counselor and as a voice for Idaho military children, who often have a tough time when a parent is deployed overseas.
She has participated in the guard's child and youth program for the past seven years.
"Really proud of all the hours I put into it. I never knew anything like this would come out of it. I just did it 'cause I loved it, and so ... it just makes me really feel proud of it," said Vanessa.
Vanessa, a high school junior, now goes on to compete for the national Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, and in the longer term, she plans to become a military officer.
April is also Month of the Military Child, and you're encouraged to wear purple to show support for the children of military service members.
