CALDWELL -- Firefighters from four area departments worked the scene of a midnight grass fire on the north side of Caldwell that threatened several homes early Thursday.
Officials say the grass fire started around 12:30 a.m. Thursday just off River Road near the Boise River.
Firefighters from Caldwell, Middleton, Star, and Parma fire Departments were able to extinguish the fire out before it burned several homes in a nearby subdivision adjacent to Burger Lane.
Caldwell Batallion Chief Brad Carico told KTVB that fighting this particular fire was challenging because it started at the base of a 70-foot cliff, making the flames difficult and hazardous for firefighters to reach.
"Because of the steepness it takes a lot more staff to work on it," Carico said. "It makes it incredibly difficult because fire wants to run up the hill, so you're trying to chase it from the bottom to keep it from getting to the top."
Investigators don't yet know what caused fire.
