BOISE -- With the hope of preventing another tragic child drowning, local musicians, the YMCA and the family of Mason Goldberg have teamed up Thursday for Rock for Water Safety.

This summer tragedy struck the Goldberg family when 5-year-old Mason drowned in a Star pond in July. In Mason's memory, his family is initiating a campaign of water awareness and safety.

"The goal was that this silent auction and entertainment would bring in funds to pay for swimming lessons for kids all over the Treasure Valley, that their parent's otherwise would be able to afford," said Sheila Beal, Mason's grandmother.

Beal told us Mason never had swim lessons, and she wants to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

"I wanted to do all that I could do for other families so they wouldn't have to maybe go through this, lose a child to drowning," said Beal.

The event started at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Humpin Hannahs on Main Steet in Boise. All proceeds will go to the YMCA to help provide swim lessons for kids.

If you want to help out, you can send checks to the YMCA for the Mason Goldberg Foundation. Organizers said they plan to host the event again next spring.
