BOISE -- Two north Idaho correctional officers have been honored for coming to the aid of others in a time of crisis.
Officers Larry Childers and Michael P. Kaschmitter have been presented with the Idaho Department of Correction's Silver Cross Award.
Officials say Childers was transporting an inmate to the Adams County Jail when helped extinguish a flaming van on Whitebird Hill on July, 2 2012.
According to IDCO, Childers ordered the van's passengers -- including children and senior citizens -- to stand back from the van because he feared it would explode, then used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames before they reached the gas tank.
Kaschmitter was honored for saving an inmate he spotted choking inside a prison dining hall.
According to IDCO, Kaschmitter successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on the offender as the man choked during breakfast at the North Idaho Correctional Institute.
“These officers are representative of the high caliber of correctional professionals who work at NICI and throughout the department,” said NICI Warden Lynn Guyer. “We are proud to be of service to the citizens of the State of Idaho.”
