BOISE -- Ada County Highway District and Boise city officials broke ground Wednesday morning for a new five-lane road that will be called Whitewater Park Boulevard.

The boulevard will provide a new north-south connection between Fairview Avenue and State Street, helping to service the city's new whitewater park.

ACHD says the new, five-lane Whitewater Boulevard will relieve traffic on the over-burdened 27th Street. It will feature two lanes of travel in each direction and a center turn lane.

According to plans, other project features include bike lanes, sidewalks, and three pedestrian crossing signals.

The project will also include a two-lane roundabout at Stewart Avenue -- which will be the entrance to the future Esther Simplot Park. See a detailed map here.

ACHD says several planning studies have identified the need for a north-south connection to better access to downtown Boise.

The city of Boise created a 30th Street Area Master Plan in hopes of revitalizing the area between downtown and the Boise River.

And in December -- the city council approved the creation of an Urban Renewal District for the area.

Construction is set to start early next month, and is expected to be complete around the end of October.

Alta Construction of Boise is the contractor for the $4.5 million project.
