BOISE -- A Caldwell optometrist accused of defrauding Medicaid of more than $1 million has agreed to plead guilty to the crime in federal court.

A plea agreement was filed with the U.S. District Court in Boise on Friday. The document shows that Christopher Card gave some of his patients phony diagnoses of glaucoma, colorblindness or other eye diseases so he could bill Medicaid for expensive tests and treatments that he never actually administered.

Prosecutors said Card began sending the fraudulent bills as early as 1993. In exchange for his guilty plea, federal prosecutors have agreed to ask the judge not to give Card the maximum sentence. Both sides have also agreed to ask that restitution be set at $1 million.
