Edwards Nampa Stadium 14
NAMPA -- A suspicious backpack found near a Nampa movie theater complex led to a tense couple of hours today, but turned out to be a false alarm.
The Nampa Police Department's bomb squad was called to the Edwards Nampa Stadium 14 theaters at 2001 North Cassia Street in Nampa.
Sgt. Tim Randall says the bomb squad was called to the scene after a theater employee found a backpack chained and padlocked to a gas meter around 10:30 a.m. A robot X-rayed the backpack but could not determine its contents. There did not appear to be an explosive device inside.
A member of the bomb unit then suited up and opened the backpack. Inside were school supplies such as books, papers and a notebook.
Randall says there was a bicycle parked near the backpack earlier in the day. A child's name was on the backpack and police contacted his parents. They have not located the juvenile. No word yet if any charges will be filed.
Several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, and the area around the theaters were blocked off during the bomb scare.
Police cleared the scene around 1:20 p.m.
The incident did not disrupt business at the theaters since the first movie of the day shows at 1:40 p.m.
