I Wonder - am I crazy or are the lights on the food cases in the freezer aisle at Albertsons following me?

Do you ever get the feeling you're being followed? Someone - or something lurking nearby. If you've been to the newly remodeled Albertsons at ParkCenter Blvd. and Apple Street in Boise and taken a stroll through the freezer aisle, you may think you're seeing things.

No, you aren't being followed, but your presence is causing the lights to turn on and off.

Newly installed LED lights on freezer case doors stay dim until you walk up to them. As you approach, a motion detector senses you and pumps up the light level on those boxes of pizza or cartons of ice cream. So no, you're not crazy.

Supervalu spokesperson Donna Eggers says the LED lights are becoming a fixture at local Albertsons stores - because they help lower the store's environmental impact. The new lights last ten years versus just 18 months for old style fluorescent bulbs. Plus, the LEDs don't put off ultraviolet light which Eggers says is better for wines and dairy products - and even keeps produce fresher.

The chain is remodeling a series of local stores, including the 16th and State store, Eagle and McMillan and others, and many of the remodel jobs incorporate the LED lights.

March 2010 Update: An Albertsons spokesperson tells us the LED lights have expanded throughout the Treasure Valley, including the Vista and Overland store, Broadway Market, Overland and Five Mile location, as well as the stores listed above. The lights are now featured in a variety of areas throughout the stores - from beer coolers to the wine department and even the lights on Idaho's famous potatoes.
