McCALL – A 72-year-old man drowned in just seven feet of water after falling off a paddleboard in Payette Lake Saturday afternoon.
The drowning victim has been identified as Larry Streeby of Asotin, Wash.
Sgt. Jason Speer with the Valley County Sheriff’s Office says Streeby had a life jacket on the board, but was not wearing it. He said this drowning should serve as a reminder to other paddleboard users of the importance of wearing a life jacket at all times. He also recommends wearing a helmet in areas where there are rocks.
State and local officials say they have seen a dramatic increase in the use of stand-up paddleboards in Valley County and across Idaho over the past few years. And since paddleboards are consider vessels in Idaho, they need to have the proper safety equipment on board, including a life jacket and sound producing device like a whistle.
