BOISE - Boise State University will award one of Idaho's foremost women an honorary doctorate degree.
Bethine Church will receive the degree during commencement ceremonies in May.
Church is the seventh recipient of the award at Boise State University, where previous honorees include NASA astronaut and former Idaho elementary teacher Barbara Morgan.
Church attended Boise Junior College, the school Boise State University was founded from, in 1942 and 1943. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a sociology degree in 1945.
Bethine is the widow of U.S. Senator Frank Church, who served in Washington, D.C., from 1957 until 1981. Sen. Church died of pancreatic cancer in 1984 at the age of 59.
Church, who is also the daughter and niece of former Idaho governors, was often called the "third senator" after her husband was elected to Congress in 1956 because of her active role in public service.
