17-year-old killed in Simco Road crash identified

ELMORE COUNTY -- A teenage boy died Thanksgiving Day when the convertible he was driving rolled in Elmore County.

The Ada County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 17-year-old Talon Owens of Boise.

Idaho State Police say Owens was driving south on Simco Road Thursday afternoon when he veered off the right shoulder, overcorrected, and lost control. The 1998 Toyota convertible rolled, throwing Owens from the vehicle.

Owens was airlifted to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, but died from his injuries hours after the wreck. The coroner said in a release that the teen died from blunt force trauma, and ruled his death an accident.

Two other teens were riding in Owens' car when the crash happened, police say. Both survived, and were driven away from the crash site in a private vehicle.

Owens, who was public about his struggles with depression, had emerged as an advocate for mental health help and suicide prevention for teens.

Owens' family has set up a GoFundMe account to help raise money for the teen's funeral. As of Friday afternoon, the fund had raised more than $2,400.
