BURNS, Ore. -- Oregon State Police say a 14-year-old boy riding a bicycle died Wednesday from injuries he sustained when he crashed into the side of a semi-trailer and was run over. The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 20 and Broadway Avenue in Burns, Oregon.
Oregon State Police say Jonathan "JP" Ptacek was killed on Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators say around 3 p.m. the teen was eastbound and going downhill when he approached the intersection. He rode his bike through a stop sign and into the side of a semi-trailer traveling south on Highway 20.
Police say the truck driver, a 54-year-old Homedale man, was not aware that the teen had collided with his trailer until he saw the bicycle in his side mirror and the teen lying in the road. He stopped when he saw the injured boy.
The trailer's tires ran over the teen who was critically injured. The boy was taken by ambulance to Harney District Hospital and then flown to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He was pronounced dead after arrival.
Police say the truck driver has fully cooperated with investigators and there is no indication he was at fault.
