Chief justice won't give State of Judiciary speech

BOISE -- At the start of every session, Idaho's legislators gather to listen to the priorities of the leaders of the administrative and judicial branches. But this year, they'll only hear from the governor.
Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice Daniel Eismann is not giving the annual State of the Judiciary address because he is still recovering from rigorous chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Idaho Courts Administrator Patricia Tobias says lawmakers will be given a written statement instead, likely later this week.
Last year, Eismann told lawmakers that the courts faced skyrocketing caseloads, especially in the Court of Appeals.
Lawmakers responded by agreeing to add another judge to the appellate panel.
Court officials say Eismann is recovering well from his treatment. His physicians have said his prognosis is good for a full recovery.
