Why is there a Star Wars Storm Trooper head painted on Joplin Rd? Why is it here?

BOISE – Less than a minute from Hewlett-Packard is a section of Joplin Road well off the beaten path. It connects to Cloverdale and dips down to the undeveloped valley below. In a galaxy far, far away - on a quiet stretch of Joplin is a large white marking on the road.

That marking appears to be in the shape of a Stormtrooper helmet from the Star Wars movie series.

The helmet is several feet tall, and appears between a large empty field and a hill – with no home or business for several hundred feet. We checked with a couple of businesses up the road – and no one seemed to know where the mysterious movie marking came from.

Is this a sign that the Imperial Stormtroopers have marked their turf and plan an attack of the clones? Or is this something to chalk up to a troublemaker with a can of white spray paint?

Robbie Johnson with the Ada County Highway District says her agency had not heard about the drawing, but agrees it is probably a case of garden variety graffiti.

While ACHD workers are usually more concerned with storm water than Stormtroopers – they do take vandalism reports seriously. Crews are out several times a week trying to stamp out tagging all over the county.

“We work with the police and the cities on this issue and we’re on the Boise City Graffiti Task Force. It’s an ongoing major headache.”

She says in this case, crews are already on the hot on the Trooper’s trail.

“They do paint over it,” Johnson said. “In a case like this where it’s on the road itself, they’ll use a black paint to do that.”

That means ACHD’s resident ‘Luke Skywalker’ will soon be out in his X-Wing Fighter (also known as a county van) with a bucket of black paint to wipe out this errant Stormtrooper.
