NAMPA -- St. Alphonsus Health System broke ground this morning on a $33.5 million, 54,000 square foot expansion project in Nampa.

Some of the additions coming to the Nampa Health Plaza are a new emergency room, maternity center and a heart care center.

"This is an investment in the health and well-being of individuals, families and businesses in Canyon County and beyond, said Sally Jeffcoat, Saint Alphonsus Health System President and CEO.

"The groundbreaking event allows the community to be a part of positive growth in our area, said Karl Keeler, CEO Saint Alphonsus Medical Center - Nampa.

St. Al's says this expansion project will allow patients to get treatment without traveling too far away from home.

Beside construction jobs, St. Al's also says it will be adding 85 new positions in the facility.

The emergency room is expected to be finished later this year.  The heart care center and maternity center are expected to be open in the fall of 2013.
