Oz Blog Day 24

As I showed you in yesterday’s blog, I’ve started putting cinnamon in my Kitchen Sink Smoothie. I quipped, “It can‘t make it taste any worse.” And, in a unique turn of events, I was right. The cinnamon, besides not making the smoothie taste worse, actually makes it taste better. My wife, however, put a teaspoon of cinnamon in her coffee, and soon regretted it. When the coffee started to get cold, the cinnamon congealed at the top of the mug to form a slimy film that looked like a blood eel. Mmmmmm… cinnamon-flavored, and a slick fishy texture? I‘m in.

Wednesday’s episode of The Dr. Oz Show was about eating twice as much, and losing weight. Oz had me at “eating twice as much.” Oz and his guest recommended eating expanders (like Portobello mushrooms, zucchini, and flavored seltzer water) with meals. They say the expanders help you feel more full by making your meals larger, but healthier. Here’s the visual demonstration.

The next part of the show was called, The lazy girl‘s guide to getting healthy. Oz recommended three simple health tests for lazy girls like us… or you… not to say you’re lazy… or that I’m a girl… this is exhausting. Anyway, the tests for lazy girls like us involved testing for circulation by putting your index fingers together and checking for a diamond shape in the negative space.

Boom! My circulation looks good. Also, my dexterity seems pretty good, since I managed to take a picture of my own hands (intentionally).

The next test involved taking your temperature when you wake up, and making sure it’s above 98 degrees for a week straight. This tests for a working thyroid gland.
Finally, Oz says you check for risk of heart disease by doing a sit and reach. If you’re in your thirties like me, you should be able to reach past your toes by three inches. I fell a little short.

Arrgghh! My toes are so far away… I blame it on my tight hamstrings. I’m working to fix that with the litany of workouts I’m doing every morning.

Oz guests also talked about some checkups that you might not need as often as you think. For instance, you don’t need a pap smear until you’re 21. I don’t know what the guitarist for Nirvana and the Foo Fighters has to do with health… OK, I just looked it up, and I was referring to Pat Smear. A pap smear is something I will NEVER need.
