OZ Blog Day Five
We’re almost a week in to the Oz Blog, and I’m asking, “What in the world have I gotten myself into?”
I’m frankly feeling a little overwhelmed already with all the stuff I’m doing/eating/taking (refer to the rundown at the bottom of the blog), and I’m only 25% done. Also, gird your loins, because I just saw an ad for the Dr. Oz show in November, and he’s going all out. I have no idea what he’ll tell me to do, only, that I will do it.
Recently on the show, Dr. Oz talked to a viewer who smells every bite of food, before she eats it. He said, while odd, it actually probably helped her eat slower and eat less. As I explain in the video above, I barely take the time to taste my food, let alone eat it. I hunker and shovel. While “Hunker and Shovel” sounds like a 70’s cop show, it’s actually just where I hunker down, and shovel in my food. This is obviously not the way to eat, and I’ll now try to savor my food a little more.
On the most recent show, Dr. Oz really let loose with the tips, recommending a number of things to recharge our body and increase energy. First, Oz recommended 400mg of astragalus per day. While “astragalus” sounds like a character on Gladiator, Oz says it’s actually an herb that can slow down aging. He also recommended 400mg of brewer’s yeast daily. That probably sounds awesome to some people, until you realize that there’s no beer attached to that brewer’s yeast.
Oz also recommended papaya juice in the morning to help with getting the most energy from the food we eat. He said it can replace our coffee if we want. I’ve been drinking two cups of coffee daily (as recommended by an Oz guest), and it’s really helping my… uh… elimination. I don’t feel comfortable going into more detail than that. You’re welcome. But, I’ll replace it with some papaya juice, so that I don’t have to monitor my caffeine as closely.
But Oz says the number one key to looking and feeling younger is human growth hormone (HGH).
You might say, “But wait, Justin, isn’t HGH a banned substance in Major League Baseball?”
Yes. But, you likely don’t play Major League Baseball.
“Oh yeah… wait, what?”
But in all seriousness, Oz isn’t talking about getting injections of the stuff. He recommends ways to get our bodies to naturally produce more HGH. That includes lifting weights, getting a good amount of sleep, and eating protein. The main building blocks of protein are amino acids. He recommends an amino acid supplement that includes glycine, ornithine, arginine, and lysine.
Oz also recommended 2 tablespoons of pea protein powder to curb cravings. He said to include it in a smoothie. I’ll probably throw that juice, yeast, and amino acid supplement in the same smoothie, just to save time and energy. I don’t want to waste too much energy making taking things that are supposed to boost my energy.

WHAT I’M TAKING EVERY DAY:
- 2000mg of glucomannan root (dietary fiber/weight loss) ($13 for a month's supply)
- 500mg of turmeric (fights liver damage/Alzheimer’s/some cancers) ($15 for a two-month's supply)
- 400mg of astragalus (slows down aging)
- 2 Tbsp of pea protein powder (curbs cravings)
- 1 Tbsp of brewer’s yeast (increases energy)
- Amino acid supplement (increases production of HGH, look/feel younger)
